What the data says about Tyne and Wear
Modelled yield is not flat across Tyne and Wear. Sunderland comes out at 849 kWh per kWp a year against 806 at Newcastle, a spread of 43 kWh per kWp. On a 500 kWp array that difference is about 21,500 kWh a year, which is worth checking before you accept a generic saving figure.
The larger roofs in Tyne and Wear follow the freight routes. Across the towns we cover that means A19, A1231, A690, A1(M), A1 and A184, which is where single-let distribution stock concentrates.
The government's planning database records 116 solar schemes in Tyne and Wear totalling 290 MW, of which 3 are already operational and 14 of the schemes in our covered postcode districts are roof mounted. Source: Renewable Energy Planning Database, Q1 2026.
Connections across the county run through Northern Powergrid. Anything above 3.68 kW per phase needs a G99 application, and the export limit they offer shapes the design, so we ask the question before the array is sized rather than after.
- Sunderland 849 kWh/kWp
- Gateshead 822 kWh/kWp
- South Shields 849 kWh/kWp
- Washington 828 kWh/kWp
- Newcastle 806 kWh/kWp
- North Shields 833 kWh/kWp
